Temperatures will remain high despite the thunderstorms
The Met Office predicts that temperatures will remain high overnight despite heavy rains.
London and the south-east (which are expected to bear the brunt of the storms) will experience highs of 21C overnight, putting an end to hopes of an easy night’s sleep. Elsewhere in England, temperatures are expected to stay in the teenage years overnight, with parts remaining above 20C.
Those celebrating in Cardiff after Wales’ victory over Turkey in euros could see temperatures stay high until late into the night. Scotland will be cooler, mostly overnight, with some areas dropping below 10C.
The drop in temperature is unlikely to put an end to the incoming thunderstorms. Alex Burkill of the Met Office explains: “Although it is cooler, the risk of thunderstorms does not go away because there is still enough heat and energy in the atmosphere to sustain storms.

Why is hail forecast at 30C?
Among the extreme weather events warned of during what could yet become the hottest day of the year is hail, frozen scoops of ice that seem to only fall during the time of year when we can see our breath.
But, says Alex Burkill of the Met Office The independent, hail is not uncommon in summer. In fact, it is generally bigger.
“It’s in the summer that we’re most likely to see large hail,” says Burkill.
“It’s not the beach ball-sized hailstones that we see in the US, but in the UK it can grow to the size of a golf ball.”
Mr Burkill said the hail gets bigger in the summer because there is more energy in the clouds when there is more heat.
The small scoops of ice cream form into clouds and merge as they fall. Due to the updrafts of the wind, the merged hailstones rise up into the clouds, allowing them to fall and merge again.
In the summer, when the updrafts are more powerful, this process is repeated more times, allowing the stones to reach a larger size.

What are the risks of incoming thunderstorms?
The Met Office Yellow weather warning says “there is a small chance that homes and businesses will be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from flooding, lightning, hail and high winds.” .
Alex Burkill, of the Met Office, tells The independent that precipitation is a concern in incoming thunderstorms because of the rate rather than the total amount.
“A lot of people are going to see strong storms,” he said, “the total precipitation should not be high, the risk of flooding is entirely due to the rate of precipitation.
“Due to the intensity of the downpours, with 30mm in an hour expected, we could see localized flash floods.”
