Liam Kelly reviews the Premier League‘s action from a data perspective, highlighting points of interest after the last round of matches.

The aim of this weekly column is to provide outstanding statistics for every round of matches, to use the underlying numbers to identify recent trends and to inform punters with tools to improve their betting on the Premier League.

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTED OBJECTIVES? USE xG TO INCREASE PROFITS IN FOOTBALL BETTING

Conte’s upward curve continues at Spurs

Tottenham may have needed a 96th-minute winner from center-back Davinson Sánchez to beat Watford this weekend, but it was yet another promising performance from Antonio Conte.

Conte’s side have cleared 2.0 expected goals for (xGF) for the seventh straight game in the Italian’s short tenure, comfortably creating better chances than their opponents in all of those matches.

Spurs have allowed an average of 0.78 expected goals against (xGA) in the eight Premier League appearances since Conte took the lead, already proving his worth.

Granted, the schedule has been good for the new manager, but only Manchester City have gained more than the 18 points Spurs have amassed in the same span. Now ranked sixth with games in hand, Tottenham can be a serious challenger for a Champions League spot.

Perhaps the next games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in their next five games will be a real litmus test of Tottenham’s level, but Spurs are no doubt in good hands with Conte.

Hammers and nails

David Moyes and West Ham seem to be embracing the chaos right now, which makes sense under the circumstances.

After a one-game winning streak in seven league games, the Hammers have won their last two in an equally entertaining way – defending an offensive stance in the face of defensive injuries.

West Ham’s top four defensive starters have lost a lot of time recently, and Angelo Ogbonna, Aaron Cresswell and Kurt Zouma remain on the sidelines, so the approach is reasonable.

Not only has it paid off, it has provided us with some exciting fixtures over the holiday season, with all three meetings involving Moyes’ side since Christmas averaging five goals and 4.23 xG per game.

West Ham quickly became the host of the Premier League.

Burnley in big trouble

Burnley’s return to action after a long period of absence has been hugely disappointing, resembling relegation food in two 3-1 defeats to Manchester United and Leeds – Maxwel Cornet the only glimmer of light.

However, Maxwel Cornet FC will again be without Maxwel Cornet in their next matches as the Ivorian, who has scored 38% of Burnley’s goals this season, leaves for the Africa Cup of Nations. One wonders if a “football club” remains in his absence.

Sean Dyche’s men fight unsurprisingly on both ends of the pitch given that the Clarets have only won one game all season, averaging 1.17 xGF and 1.72 xGA per game, and their schedule to come does not give hope.

As it stands, Burnley faces the prospect of Leicester, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool in their next four games, a race that could see them further away from safety than the current two-point gap.

How long can we really continue to expect Burnley to get out of Burnley’s trouble? This could be the year they go down.
