The senior British civil servant was questioned by police investigating alleged lockdown breaches in Whitehall, it was claimed last night.

Simon Case is now believed to be among dozens of senior officials who received the questionnaire asking them to explain their attendance at events which likely breached Covid restrictions.

The Cabinet Secretary is believed to have been quizzed over a Christmas gathering for staff in his private office in December 2020 – and could be fined from £100 if the Met finds he has no “ reasonable excuse” to participate.

A source told the Financial Times: ‘Simon is totally compromised, he fears he will be fined by the police – he is well known to be under investigation.’ He also struggles to run the civil service. I don’t see it lasting.

Mr Case was tasked with investigating initial reports of parties at No 10 – until it emerged he had thrown a Christmas party himself.

The Cabinet Office said last night it would be ‘not appropriate to comment on speculation’.

Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have already received forms from the Met.
