At Queen Mary’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, we are proud to celebrate the outstanding results of REF. Our distinctive, curiosity-driven research is recognized worldwide with 97% of scientific and technical research output rated as internationally excellent, of which nearly half are considered world-leading.
In engineering, Queen Mary is now ranked 2n/a in the UK for the quality of our search results and 7and globally. Our IT and IT is ranked 8and in the country, 5and in search power and the joint first for impact. Chemistry increased from 21 positions to 8and in the UK for impact, while biological sciences fell from 15 positions to 13and in the countryside. Across all science and engineering subjects, Queen Mary University of London shows an impressive upward trajectory with increased research quality and power.
We are particularly proud of the significant impact of our research on the difference in lives and in society at large, and the recognition of this through the recently published results. Our research has informed policy on biodegradable plastics, nuclear waste, water quality and pollution; advised on malaria interventions and better value of electricity for houses; developed innovative new materials, including biomaterials, improving the lives of hundreds of thousands of people; and transformed and led innovation in audio production.
Our strong REF performance and leadership position in social mobility reaffirms our research and teaching excellence and demonstrates our commitment to being the most inclusive research-intensive university in the world.
