Premier League headlines as Jarrod Bowen opens up on England dream amid first Tottenham signing

Here’s a round-up of the latest Premier League titles from Tuesday, May 31.
Liam Cooper presented as a possible alternative to Kieran Tierney
Kieran Tierney’s absence through injury raises a selection issue for Scotland manager Steve Clarke ahead of their World Cup tie-break against Ukraine on Wednesday. Who plays on the left of defense instead of Arsenal’s wing-back-turned-centre-back?
Scott McKenna is not yet fully settled at international level, but he has been in fine form for Nottingham Forest. Leeds United captain Liam Cooper seems to be the other candidate. Both of these players are centre-backs, however. If Clarke prefers a more attacking left centre-back in the mold of Tierney, Bologna teenager Aaron Hickey – who played there on occasion for Hearts – would seem to fit the bill.
Tottenham have signed Ivan Perisic
Tottenham have signed Croatia international Ivan Perisic on a free transfer. The 33-year-old will join the Premier League outfit when his contract at Inter Milan expires at the end of June after agreeing a two-year contract.
Perisic worked with Spurs boss Antonio Conte at the San Siro, winning the 2020-21 Serie A title together, and turned down a new contract with the Italian club in order to travel to London.
His arrival will mark a break with Tottenham’s usual transfer policy of signing younger players with selling value and is a further signal that they are giving Conte their full backing.
Perisic is an experienced winner, having won league titles in Germany – with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich – and Italy while also playing and scoring in a World Cup final for Croatia.
His versatility will appeal to Conte, who deployed him as a left-back at Inter, but he can also play as a winger, second striker or attacking midfielder. He leaves the San Siro after seven years with happy memories.
Jarrod Bowen says England call a dream come true
Jarrod Bowen admits a career in England felt “millions of miles away” as he plied his trade in non-League football just eight years ago. The 25-year-old West Ham striker has won a first Three Lions call-up for the upcoming Nations League fixtures after a fine Premier League campaign.
Previously linked with Newcastle United, Bowen ended the season with 12 league goals as the Hammers secured European qualification thanks to their league position for a second consecutive year.
Having seen his chances of a first cap thwarted by injury in March, Bowen’s form continued on his return to the West Ham side and he is now in line to make his England debut in the coming weeks.
It would see the culmination of a rise to the top of the game which almost ended when former club Hereford went bankrupt in 2014. Asked about England’s dreams at this stage, Bowen replied: “A a million miles, back then it was Conference Football for my local team and that was it.
“Obviously you have dreams, but you’re not thinking of someone from Hereford, to move to Hull in the first place, it was just playing for my home team and just playing week after week in the Conference.
“Sometimes I sit and look at where we come from, and especially being in a camp in England now – not having a big head, I have to take my hat off to where I come from and what I did. That’s all. Everything you dream of when you grow up and get the call, of course it’s an honor and a privilege for me.”
