London fire: Explosion sparks huge blaze in Bethnal Green as thick black smoke rises | United Kingdom | New
Thick black smoke billows from an eight storey building on Granby Street in Shoreditch, near Bethnal Green Road. Fifteen firefighters and a hundred firefighters are on site.
Firefighters were called at 5:53 p.m.
Crews from Whitechapel, Shoreditch, Shadwell, Dockhead, Islington and surrounding fire stations attended, the London Fire Brigade said.
Station Commander Paul Green, who is at the scene, said: “Firefighters rescued one person from a second floor flat who was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
“Four other people were taken to safety by teams using emergency hoods.
“Firefighters continue to conduct a systematic search of the building.”
The extent of the injuries is not yet known.
Hackney Police officers are on hand to assist firefighters and implement road closures.
Bethnal Green Road is closed from Brick Lane to Queensbridge Road and motorists are urged to avoid the area where possible.
Tower Hamlets Police said: “Warning – Bethnal Green Road is closed in both directions near the junction with Brick Lane as we are dealing with a serious incident with London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade. Please avoid The area.”
The cause of the fire remains uncertain.
A witness said on social media: ‘Something just happened in Bethnal Green.
Another added: “I felt a bang nearby while I was inside, must be some kind of gas explosion.”
A third wrote: “Scary. My windows rattled.
Tower Hamlets News has shared a video in which flats on the third and fourth floors of the block can be seen on fire.
They said: “Distressing footage of a fire at Bentworth Court, Bethnal Green. The surrounding roads have been closed by emergency services, please avoid the area.”
