League One 2021/22 matches: BIG Sunderland schedule suggests we already know

The Black Cats will see their matches for the new League One campaign tomorrow, in what will be Lee Johnson’s first full season at the helm.
But we may have already had a first indication of where Sunderland will play on some key dates.
Newcastle United’s games for the 2021/22 season were posted last week and traditionally the Magpies and Wearsiders won’t play at home on the same weekend.
With fans set to resume games to some extent this season – with discussions ongoing about what crowd level will be allowed for the start of the new campaign – this trend is expected to continue.
So with that in mind, where could Sunderland play on some key dates?
Ligue 1 opening day
League One is set to start on the weekend of August 7, with the Premier League set to start seven days later.
Newcastle United will start their home season against West Ham United on August 14, meaning Sunderland will likely be out this weekend.
Traditionally, clubs play at home and away during the first two weekends of the campaign – could that suggest that the Black Cats will be home on opening day?
The day after Christmas
Sunderland did not play Boxing Day last season, with its scheduled home game against Hull City postponed after a COVID outbreak at the Academy of Light.
But this season, it looks like the Wearsiders will be on the road to the festive game – given that Newcastle host Manchester United on December 26.
New Years Day
The Black Cats could be home on New Year’s Day, however.
Sunderland has not played at home on January 1 since entering League One this season, but it seems likely this season given that Newcastle are at Southampton on the same day.
Last day of the season
Sunderland could also be on the road for the last day of the season.
League One’s campaign is set to end on the weekend of April 30 with Newcastle set to face Liverpool at St James’s Park on the same day.
