TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) — A winter storm moved through the Deep South on Sunday morning and brought winter rainfall from Mississippi, Alabama, north to Tennessee and east to North Carolina. Meanwhile, a line of heavy rain stretched from northern Georgia to southwest Florida.

According to the National Weather Service, the powerful storm system was helping generate stronger wind gusts in the area, and not just thunderstorms. A 39 mph gust of wind was reported at the NWS office on the FSU campus on Sunday morning.

The winds are really strong this morning. For the past 3 hours ending at 8:45 a.m. EST, gusts of 30-45 mph were common, with coastal gusts of 40-55 mph. Windy conditions will continue into today, then begin to lessen this evening. Image of Horseshoe Beach: @FSWNHorseshoe pic.twitter.com/kvlQb6JEuo

Wind advisories were in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday as the surface low deepens and the pressure gradient increases. Sustained winds could reach 39 mph according to the National Weather Service and would be enough to move large objects. A gale warning was also in effect for coastal and offshore waters until late Sunday evening, and a coastal flood warning was also in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday with water levels of 2 to 4 feet above normally dry ground possible.

Most of the rain left the viewing area, but we were still able to see a few showers passing through the rest of the day. But the clouds are likely to linger as colder air enters Big Bend and South Georgia with very windy conditions. Highs will be mostly in the 50s.

Temperatures will drop and remain near or below normal for the first half of the new week. Monday through Wednesday morning lows will be in the low to mid 30s with highs in the high 50s to near 60s Monday and Tuesday.

Conditions will moderate from Wednesday as the wind shifts and another chance of showers returns on Thursday as models agree on another cold front advancing in the southeast. The threat of rain appears to persist through Friday with the possibility of another blast of cold air next Saturday.
